In his life-time, Sumarokov was called the 'Northern Racine'. 7 He was the author of nine tragedies (including his rendering of Shakespeare's Hamlet), twelve comedies, numerous satires, fables, and other works. Sumarokov was the first to introduce the genres of tragedy and comedy into Russian literature.

A second model suggested itself around distinc-tive Russian genres: saint’s life, fairy tale, war epic, “notes” or File Size: 1MB.

The book’s rather mundane title responds equally to the marketing strategy of the publisher and the basic hypothesis behind the book, which is a simple but, I would like to believe, innovative one.

If we look at the cover and leave aside the author, we will see that there are five people: four writers, plus the charming and beautiful female.

Faber’s book 1, however, discusses at length the philosophy of music, an appropriate subject for a university textbook. He borrowed numerous music examples from Heyden, including Ockeghem’s well-known Prenez sur moy and the Kyrie II from Isaac’s Missa ‘Quant j’ay au cueur’.The literary high points of the eighteenth century - the satires of Prince Antioch Kantemir, the odes of Vasily Trediakovsky and Pavel Sumarokov, the tragedies of Yakov Kniazhnin and the comedies of Denis Fonvizin - hardly amounted to a national literature.

All their works were derived from genres in the neoclassical tradition.Aleksandr P.
